Chapter IV - The ‘Thing’
Brian walked down the long corridor leading to the conference room. He knocked on the door.
“Pshh!” Brian looked around to see where that came from, but he didn’t saw anyone so he knocked the door again. “Pshh!… over here” said a voice, he looked around again and saw the Commander Taylor behind a pillar making him signals.
“What?” he asked a bit confused, the Commander ran towards him and pulled him behind the pillar before the Royal Advisor opened the door.
“Who is it?”
“No-one, Sir, there’s no-one here…”
“Stupid prankers” said the King before he closed the door back.
The commander had Brian against him, covering his mouth, once the Adviser had closed the door he let him go.
“What the hell was that for?! I have a meeting with the King!”
“I know, Shhh! don’t yell, they’ll hear you…”
“What do you want?” he said lowering the volume of his voice.
“Be careful… you don’t know what you’re getting into, you don’t have to worry about the King, he’s fine, but If I was you, I wouldn’t trust that Advisor so much…” He said getting a cigarette out of his pocket.
“Why not? What about him?” the commander offered him one but he declined it.
“I don’t know… there’s something about that silly smile of him that I don’t like, he seems to be harmless but I don’t buy it; you can’t trust anyone…”
“And why should I trust you? How can I know you’re not trying to confuse me or something?”
“Well, I guess you have to, and if you know what’s good for you, you will” He looked at him up and down and winked smiling, then turned away “Nice shoes, by the way!” he yelled before tuning the corner in the hall.
Brian sat down in the hallway, confused on what’s just happened. He looked at his shoes. They weren’t anything fancy, just his regular white clogs. He heard the King’s door open and could hear the conversation happening between him and the adviser.
“One day?! He’s gone mad, I told him we wouldn’t even be there until tomorrow.” said the King.
“All right then. We’ll have to do It.” the adviser replied. Brian was still confused.
“The… you know… thing. We’ll have to do it tonight, in his sleep.”
Brian knew they were talking about him. What they were going to do to him while he was sleeping left Brian stumped.
“Is that boy going to come at all?” asked the King.
“I don’t know, Sir, he was informed that his presence in this meeting was necessary”
“Go get him… no, you know what? Just tell him that the meeting got cancelled and that he can go rest, then, we he’s sleep, do it… I can’t stand that boy anymore”
The King walked down the long hall echoing his footsteps with his high-heeled shoes, the advisor went in the opposite direction. Brian didn’t move, he felt so scared. What was happening? What were they going to do? The Commander was right, he couldn’t believe anyone. Brian stood up and started walking through the halls trying to get a way out of there, to go back to his place, but all of then looked the same; he felt lost, alone and hopeless, whatever they had planned they’ll probably do it.
“What are you doing?” said a voice near him; he was trying to break the glass of a window. “You will never be able to break it, besides, Do you realize that even if you did, WE’RE ON SPACE, Do you want to die or…?” Said the Commander Taylor walking towards him.
They were in a closet somewhere in the bottom of the ship. It smelled terrible enough to make you lose your scent.
“How, HOW, are you not dying with this scent?!” Brian asked.
The Commander quickly cupped his hand over Brian’s nose and mouth; there were footsteps in the hallway and by the lack of echo, the Commander knew it was the Adviser. When the footsteps disappeared, Commander Taylor took his hand away.
“Look, Brian. If you want to survive at all on this ship, you’ve got to stay quiet.” He inspected Brian quickly, deducting that he was still confused, “I’m used to it,” he reached his arm up and pulled a string, turning on the light. Looking around, it was very small, but there was a small cot underneath some shelves, but behind a few posters. “This is my room. Nobody knows about it…. They still think I board in one of the actual suites.”
Brian began to wonder just how sane Commander Taylor really was….
“I didn’t ask… but ok” said Brian, the Commander sat on the cot.
“Can you tell me what is going on here? because I can’t anymore… you told me that I didn’t had to worry about the King, but then, when you left, I hear them talking, they’re gonna do something to me!” said very worried, but not yelling.
“What? What is that something?”
“I don’t know they called it the ‘Thing’”
“I have no idea!… but I don’t think that ‘thing’ is a good thing, or what do you think?” Brian asked, leaning against the wall.
“He is into that too? That bastard!… maybe he works for Ziggy”
“The man that I’m supposed to fight with? Oh God, I shouldn’t had wake up that day, I knew I should had stayed in home… I just want to get out of here!”
“Calm down, you’re beginning to put pressure on me, and no man asked for that.” the Commander tried to soothe Brian, but it clearly wasn’t working.
“Commander Taylor, I-I don’t know what to do….” Brian was so lost and on the verge of tears.
“Oh all right, first off, call me Roger. But not around the royalties; I’d be killed for being regarded as ‘Roger.’” the Commander directed. “Now that that’s out there, I’ve got a plan. You’ve only got to make it through tonight, and then tomorrow, you’d fight Ziggy.”
“Comman- Roger, no! I-I-I can’t fight him. I’ll be killed… I-I have a family… And a life back on Earth. I can’t let that all be ruined.” Brian objected.
“You have to listen and believe me, Brian! I’ve been doing this for a long period of time…” Roger looked at Brian. “Okay, I’m going to keep you in here tonight, where you can be safe. But I won’t be in here with you. I’m going to sleep in the room I was assigned to, and then sneak back down here in the “morning” to help you.”
Roger got up to leave. “You won’t be needing anything, will you?”
Brian thought about what he should say. “No, Commander, I’m fine. But…. I really don’t think I can spend a night in a smelly, damp, dark closet alone.”
Roger sighed a heavy sigh.
“SO?! What am I supposed to do about it? I can’t solve every single problem of your life, like what? Do you want me to stay here with you? There is no room for two in the cot and…” Brian felt really stupid, but he was afraid, more than scared, terrified, he looked down feeling like an idiot.
“Fine… I’ll stay here, but I won’t sleep in the floor”
