Soon they found themselves running discreetly thru the long corridors of the ship. It was so confusing for Brian, they all looked the same. A voice in the speaker muttered few things, but Brian didn’t understand either, it must had been in their natal language; weird, he never stop to think these creatures spoke a different language since they always spoke to him in his own.
“Shit! … We’re screwed” whispered Roger.
“What? Why? What’s happening Roger? What did the voice say?” asked Brian nervously, things had started to feel more real so suddenly, all that time he had been hoping all that was just one of his crazy dreams, and that he was going to wake up in his bed, in his small room with his cat beside him.
Roger didn’t answer; Emma and he just looked at each other. “We have to hurry… are you sure you still want to do this?” He asked looking him in the eyes as he held his arms, Brian nodded and Roger nodded too, so they kept going. Roger was in front of them, leading their way, maybe they could use the Ship of the Olgahtron, he should have asked where it was before leaving the fitness room… too late for that, “Which other way?”
The voice in the speaker kept talking and he couldn’t understand a single thing until the words “Ziggy Stardust” came in. Brian froze, that’s what it was all about, that’s what Roger meant, it was about Ziggy, Had he arrived on the ship? Roger stopped so suddenly it didn’t gave Brian time to stop too so he crashed against him. A group of Rhyenians interstellar soldiers and a few robots passed running in the hall, and our three friends leaned themselves against the wall hoping they didn’t notice them, thankfully they didn’t, and once they were gone they kept going. Emma ran the other side of the hallway first, and then it was Brian’s turn.
“Just run fast and no one will see you” Roger whispered. He knew all the things he was doing were not fine, his life was in danger for doing them, sure he could easily left Brian behind but he couldn’t, there was something about this guy that didn’t let him, he looked so lost, hopeless and vulnerable that he felt the need to take care of the guy. “You’ll be fine… go”
Brian took a deep breath and did it. Just when he was so close to the other side of the long corridor a voice called his name and he froze.
It was the King. Roger and Emma froze as well. Roger kicked and cursed in silence, he had told Brian he was going to be fine and the next minute the man they’ve been avoiding finds him.
“Brian?! Oh Mother Mercury! Where have you been, boy?” he asked walking in his direction, if he kept going he would see Roger and Emma and then they all would be dead, he couldn’t let that happen, they only wanted him anyway; Time to face his destiny. He turned and smiled, trying not to look as nervous as he was. “We’ve been looking for you…” there was a very obvious anxious tone in the King’s voice… anxious to kill him, probably.
“Oh, I’m sorry I got lost and I been walking around the ship… all the halls look the same” Brian excused himself, and to his surprise the King bought it, or at least he seemed to.
“Hush boy, it’s fine. You’re here now… Ziggy is about to arrive in the ship, we gotta be going, come with me” The King took Brian’s hand and leaded him the way back to where he was supposed to be. Before disappearing completely from their view, Brian looked back at Roger and smiled. It wasn’t a normal smile, it was a “goodbye and thank you for everything” kind of smile. Roger’s heart broke and ached.
Brian stood there, into that small white room. The King told him he should wait there until it was the moment to fight Ziggy, but Brian knew they had him there until it was the moment to kill him. Lots of thoughts came to his head, memories of the sad and happy moments of his life, school, his friends, his parents… his parents, he didn’t get to say goodbye. Brian frowned worriedly, his poor mother, he couldn’t stop thinking how she would feel when he didn’t come back from that school trip, all the suffering of his parents, “Why me?”
He took a deep breath and sighed heavily, took his cup and drank. Where in hell was that stupid Advisor? He was not ready to face Ziggy alone… at least he had Brian now.
8 knocks. 8 solid knocks at his door. “Ziggy” he thought, he was there, outside in the hallway to the room waiting for him to open. The King’s heart beating faster excited and nervous, the moment had come. He fixed his hair slightly before opening and licked his lips. When he opened he felt his knees go weak at Ziggy’s glare. He was perfect. Mercury had to hold himself from the door not to faint there, and then he knelt and kissed his hand gently.
“My Lord” he said softly, you could feel all the adoration in his voice. For the King there was not other creature in their Universe and others more perfect and beautiful than Ziggy Stardust. “I been waiting for this moment longer of what I would’ve wished…” he said at the edge of tears.
“Stand up Mercury, there’s no need to kneel” Walked in Stardust, looking around the room. The King still silent closed the door behind him, and turned to admire Ziggy once more, shaking. Looking directly into his eyes, Ziggy took with his hands both sides of the Kings head and approached, Mercury closed his eyes slightly expecting a kiss that didn’t come.
“Where is the boy’s body?”
“NO! NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!” the Commander would not stop shouting.
“Taylor! Fucking shut up before you get the both of us killed! The human was enough; do you want us to go, too?” Emma was angry, yet the tone of her voice indicated worry.
“At this point, it doesn’t even matter anymore, Emma! He’s going to DIE and it’s my entire fault. I’ll have to live with this FOREVER. I don’t die. You get to die. I have to be faithful to the King for eternity. Now, I have to live with the fact that the only friend I’d ever had was killed because of me.” The commander fell to the floor and did something strange – he wept.
While the King awkwardly tried to explain his reasoning behind why the boy was living and Ziggy reacted to it, Brian found time to grab the Red Special from under the table and crawl through a duct in the wall towards the ground.
“I’ll take what I can get from the boy and do away with you later,” Ziggy said as he pushed the King aside, not only with enough force to bruise the King’s shoulders, but enough to also substantially kill him inside. “MERCURY!!!” Ziggy screamed with extreme anger. His hair had gone from a pale red to a deep, fiery red within a matter of moments.
“Y-yes, Ziggy, sir?” the King managed to mutter out of his mouth, while shaking with fear. Ziggy did not utter another word, but rather, with a swift movement, shuffled to the left, pointed at the table where Brian was supposed to be laying, and stared at the King.
Both men were left speechless.
The Olgahtron was beginning to get bored while looking after the Royal Advisor. She decided after a few hours of polishing her gun, it was time she tie him up and lock him in a closet, so she did so.
As she was leaving the fitness room, she took a look at the security cameras, only finding the Commander in a tangled mess in the main hallway and Ziggy Stardust and King Mercury yelling at each other while frantically searching the King’s room. She noticed the boy was missing and immediately knew where he was headed, so she took off running – or, whatever you would calls a robot that moved at such pace.
“Commander, look, I know you may seem like it’s the end of the world – probably because it is, but if we act now we can still save Brian.” With that, the Commander jumped into the air and wiped his eyes. He was ready.
“Where do we have to go, what do we have to do?” he asked Emma. He was starting to run in place. Emma, nobody actually, had ever seen the Commander so determined to do something so much in his lifetime so far. You could tell that he cared about the boy very much, more than himself almost.
“The first thing we need to do is delay any movement of the King and Ziggy. Next, we’ll need to tackle the robots around the ship by turning off their main connectivity force.” Emma was completely certain of every move she planned on making and what the positives, negatives and backfires would all be. Roger was content with the idea and started to head towards the electronic lab.
In the electronic lab, it was obvious who knew what and how this was going to work. The Commander was completely confused yet curious to see how every button and switch affected things. Meanwhile, Emma knew exactly what to do and checked the security cameras.
“Okay,” she said after making sure Brian wasn’t in the room. “He’s not there, so we’re going to shut the door of the King’s room. What’s it like in there, is there any other doors leading out?”
The Commander informed her that there wasn’t and she proceeded to shut the door and lock it. “But if he’s not there, how’d he get out? They’re not going to let him out through the main door.”
“The only other way out is through the vents, and only a human would be able to crawl through those.” Once Roger heard this, he had hope. He knew Brian was capable of things.
“So he’s still out there?” Roger asked with a smile, the first one he’d had since being around the young human.
“Not if we don’t shut down those robots.”
Brian was almost out of breath, but he knew his only way of escaping was to get to the Commander’s makeshift room. He peeked into the nearest vent and noticed the blue lightsaber down on the floor, next to a small cot. There was no way he could fit down there unless he slid face-first through the hole, which would surely result in injury.
Suddenly, the door opened. Brian backed away from the vent as fast, and quietly, as possible. He heard someone whisper his name.
“Briiiiiaaaaaaan! Human! Are you in here? It’s me; the Olgahtron. I saw that you left the room. I’m here to help you find Commander Taylor.” Brian wasn’t sure if it was actually her, since the lights still weren’t on and her voice was muffled, but he put trust in her anyway.
“I’m in the vent. I can’t get out.” He whispered. She immediately grabbed the lightsaber on the ground and told Brian to stand back. In a quick gesture, the vent had fallen but before it made a noise, the Olgahtron caught it. “Okay, Brian,” the Olgahtron said, while standing on the small cot. “Just crawl through the hole. Do not be afraid, I will catch you so you do not fall.”
Brian slowly made his way out of the hole and into the Olgahtron’s arms.
“All right. Let’s go find that little shit. I know he’s missed you.”
The King was entirely focused on trying to get Ziggy to even show some amount of affection. Then the door suddenly closed, and all chances of King Mercury’s wish coming true were lost. Not only was Ziggy mad that the King didn’t have the boy’s body on the table and that the boy had escaped but also that they were now trapped in the room with no way out.
“Okay, I’m turning off all the robots in 3…2…1…” Emma pulled a lever and for a moment there was no power. Everything resumed except the robots. Now her and the Commander could set out to find the only person Roger wanted to see.
The Olgahtron was in the middle of a detailed story when she started to slow down and become illiterate. She never knew she was programmed into the robotic system, but only because she’d been unconscious when her prosthetic was attached. She uttered the word “go” before dropping Brian and stopping completely.
